Sedation Questions

Q. Will I be put to sleep for my procedure?

A. If you are having a colonoscopy or a upper endoscopy, yes, you will be sedated. This is not general anesthesia but most people remember nothing about the procedure. Our goal is to keep this from being a painful experience. Cystoscopy and sigmoidoscopy procedures usually do not require sedation.

Q. Who will administer the sedation?

A. A registered nurse who has been trained in “Moderate Sedation” and who maintains annual competencies will administer the sedation under the direct supervision of your physician.

Q. Is this safe?

A. While there are always risks associated with IV sedation, we take special care to ensure your safety. You will be placed on a monitor that lets us watch your heart
rate, blood pressure and your oxygen level. Your vital signs are continuously monitored by our well trained nursing staff.

Q. Will I need a driver?

A. Yes, because of the sedation you will not be allowed to drive away from the facility. It is recommended you do not drive for 24 hours.
